Exact access and public ownership

The official IDFG access record for Clark Fork Driftyard identifies the site as a Panhandle Region fishing and boating access in Bonner County. IDFG’s river planner says the agency-operated Driftyard and Johnson Creek sites provide the best access to the lower river and delta.

IDFG places the Driftyard about 3.5 miles west of Clark Fork off Highway 200. Leave the highway only for the signed access road and use the main public parking area. The final map uses the site coordinates cross-checked against the IDFG access map rather than routing to the town center.

What stays open year-round

IDFG changed management of the Pend Oreille Wildlife Management Area access in 2021 so the main parking lot and boat launch remain open year-round. The agency’s year-round access notice also makes clear that the road is not plowed. Snow, ice, mud or high water can therefore make a technically open road impractical for some tow vehicles.

Do not confuse year-round access with unrestricted vehicle travel. The peninsula road gate remains closed to motorized use all year. Walking beyond that gate is welcome, and IDFG describes the out-and-back walk as about 0.8 mile.

Spring parking and loop-road limits

The gates west of the main parking lot close beginning February 1. IDFG reopens the loop road in spring only after soil moisture drops enough to avoid rutting and weed-management work can proceed. That means the main ramp and lot can remain available while additional vehicle access and camping space beyond the gates are restricted.

There is no fixed reopening date in the current official guidance. Do not drive around gates, park off road or assume a previous year’s opening date applies. If spring space is critical, contact the IDFG Panhandle Regional Office before towing to the site.

Ramp, dock, restroom and accessibility

IDFG verifies a boat ramp, dock, portable restroom and accessible designation at Clark Fork Driftyard. The official record does not publish measured ramp slope, dock height, transfer equipment, marked accessible-parking dimensions or a guaranteed dock-installation schedule.

Visitors who need a specific accommodation should confirm current conditions with IDFG. Before backing in, walk the ramp edge, check water depth and look for driftwood or sediment that can collect after changing flows.

Seasonal low water can limit launching

The IDFG Clark Fork River Fishing Planner warns that Lake Pend Oreille’s elevation affects ramps on the lower river, especially during winter drawdown. A ramp can remain open while being too shallow for a particular trailer, hull or tow setup.

Check lake level and weather before departure, use a spotter when practical, and stop if the ramp end or traction is uncertain. IDFG identifies Derr Island as the best lower-river winter access, so it is a useful official alternative when low pool compromises Driftyard.

Camping at Clark Fork Driftyard

The current IDFG record lists camping and specifies camping in the large parking lot or on the adjacent access road. The 2021 management notice says parking or camping adjacent to the loop road is allowed when that area is open. It does not publish reservable sites, hookups, potable water, a dump station or a guaranteed length of stay.

Treat this as a simple access-site camping opportunity rather than a developed campground. Obey every posted sign, keep the ramp and traffic lanes clear, pack out waste and never move a vehicle beyond a closed gate. Spring loop-road closure can sharply reduce the space available outside the main lot.

Fishing the lower Clark Fork River

IDFG recommends the Clark Fork River as fishing water and lists walleye, brown trout, cutthroat trout, mountain whitefish, smallmouth bass, rainbow trout, bull trout, northern pike, cutbow and lake trout. Species presence is not a promise of easy fishing, and the lower river changes character as it spreads into delta channels and Lake Pend Oreille.

Anglers should be prepared for current, shallow bars, submerged wood and route choices that change with lake elevation. Avoid disturbing waterfowl and wildlife on the surrounding management area, particularly when walking beyond the motorized gate.

Current Clark Fork fishing rules

For the Clark Fork River section upstream of the line from the county boat dock near Johnson Creek to Bear Paw Point, IDFG’s current 2025–2027 rules set no limit on lake trout, a six-trout limit with no harvest of cutthroat trout, and catch-and-release-only fishing for rainbow trout from December 1 through the Friday before Memorial Day weekend. Bull trout are catch-and-release throughout the Panhandle Region.

Rules differ once a boat reaches adjacent Lake Pend Oreille or tributaries, and emergency actions can change faster than access pages. Carry the correct license and check the current Idaho fishing rules immediately before fishing. When location on a boundary is uncertain, use the more conservative rule until it is resolved.

Boating and delta safety

• Wear a properly fitted life jacket and dress for cold water, not only the air temperature.
• Check river flow, lake elevation, wind and weather before launching.
• Scout the ramp for depth, debris and the concrete endpoint during low pool.
• Slow down in shallow delta channels and watch for bars, woody debris and sudden current changes.
• Carry a chart or offline map; braided channels can look alike from water level.
• Keep the dock and launch lane open for active loading and unloading.
• Respect the year-round peninsula-road gate and all seasonal loop-road closures.
