Huron Meadows Metropark near Brighton offers two different waterfront visits: the Huron River at Cedar Ridge and Maltby Lake at Sunset Ridge. Choose your starting area before unloading a kayak or setting out for a walk. The river launch and lake fishing pier serve different plans.

Cedar Ridge or Sunset Ridge?

Use the official Huron Meadows park map to make the first decision. Cedar Ridge is the southern river access area, with parking and a canoe/kayak launch marked beside the Huron River. Sunset Ridge is beside Maltby Lake. The golf course and ski center are another distinct destination farther north.

For a paddle, start your planning with Cedar Ridge. For a lakeside fishing-pier visit, choose Sunset Ridge. For a trail outing, select a named route and locate its parking connection on the map before leaving the car. A map symbol establishes the facility’s location; it does not confirm today’s launch surface, restroom availability or river conditions.

Plan the river trip before carrying your boat

A launch is only one part of a river itinerary. Identify your takeout, confirm legal access at both ends, and arrange the return journey before starting. Do not assume a downstream paddle will be an easy upstream return. Bring a properly fitted life jacket and choose a route suited to the group’s experience.

The Huron River Water Trail conditions page describes river miles 84–80, between the Placeway area and Cedar Ridge, as rustic water where fallen trees and natural barriers are common. That is a reason to assess an upstream-to-Cedar Ridge trip carefully, rather than treating the park’s launch as proof of an unobstructed route.

Check that page for McCabe Road bridge work before a through-trip. Its July notice is historical, while additional fall 2026 work was anticipated; confirm the current situation instead of assuming either an active closure or clear passage. Farther downstream, the listed Flook Dam portage closure for the 2026 season also prevents assuming a continuous open route toward the Dexter-area parks.

Choose a named trail and respect the closure

The park map lists Cedar Trace at 1¾ miles and Hidden Lake Bend at ¾ mile. Those are useful route-length references when comparing walks; they are not a promise that combining paths produces an equally simple loop. Keep the map available at trail junctions and allow time to retrace your route if needed.

As checked October 25, 2026, the Metroparks conditions page lists the Moraine Fen trail closed indefinitely between markers 34 and 35. Do not build an outing around completing that section. The same page directs hikers to designated hiking trails and says golf-course cart paths are not hiking trails.

Expect a trail outing rather than assuming a paved promenade. Leaves can hide uneven footing in fall. Use the winter trail information when ski operations begin, and follow posted seasonal route rules.

Maltby Lake is the pier option

The park directory places the accessible fishing pier and observation deck at Sunset Ridge on Maltby Lake. It describes an accessible parking/path connection and a 480-foot ramp alternative to the steps. Sunset Ridge also has a playground. These details make it a separate option for a pier-and-picnic visit; they do not establish an accessible boat transfer at Cedar Ridge.

Parking, hours and restroom checks

The official park address is 8765 Hammel Road, Brighton, MI 48116. A daily or annual vehicle entry pass is required. The current directory lists park hours as 7 a.m.–10 p.m.; confirm hours before a late visit, especially as November begins, because the older map prints a different seasonal schedule.

The conditions page still displayed a Cedar Ridge restroom notice dated October 21, 2026, when checked for this article. It described concrete work and a closure that day. Confirm whether the restrooms have reopened rather than treating that dated notice as today’s status. Park administration is listed on the official map at 734-426-8211.

Other nearby waterfront plans

For a different Brighton-area lake outing, compare the Kent Lake shore-access and boat-launch guide. For a separate downstream park visit, see Hudson Mills Rapids View. These are separate destinations, not a verified open paddling itinerary between parks.
