Dodge #4 State Park gives Cass Lake visitors several ways to reach the water, but the fishing pier, carry-in kayak launch and boat ramp serve different needs. Before driving to Waterford, decide whether you are carrying fishing gear, carrying a kayak or towing a boat. That choice affects your parking and the equipment you should unload.

For nearby alternatives and a comparison by activity, use our Southeast Michigan day-trip planner, which connects fishing access, waterfront walks and paddling guides across the region.

Fishing pier and carry-in kayak access

The official DNR park directory identifies an accessible Cass Lake fishing pier that includes a carry-in kayak launch. The DNR’s separate accessible-fishing directory also lists the park’s pier. Check with staff if your trip depends on a particular transfer feature or unobstructed accessible approach.

For a shore-fishing visit, inspect the approach and available fishing space before carrying every item from the car. Pack a small tackle bag, cover exposed hooks and leave a clear route for people passing behind you. Keep kayak transfers and fishing lines from competing for the same working space.

A carry-in launch is a different plan from backing a trailer down a ramp. Before unloading a kayak, work out the legal parking location, carrying route and a comfortable way to return it to the vehicle. A launch listing does not guarantee that a seasonal dock or transfer component is installed on your visit date.

Use Bay parking when you are not towing a trailer

The DNR specifically directs vehicles without trailers to the Bay parking area. Follow current signs when you arrive and avoid occupying spaces intended for boat trailers. Do not assume the closest-looking space is the appropriate one for a car-top kayak or a shore-fishing trip.

Save the official Dodge #4 facility map before leaving home. It separates the boat-launch and accessible-pier area from Bay Lot, Hill Lot, Hess Lot and Beach Lot. It also marks a fishing site near Bay Shelter and a separate observation pier along the shore. An observation-pier label should not be treated as a fishing designation.

The map marks trailer-prohibited road sections and paths to the beach. If towing, settle your route before entering a parking loop. If walking, use the mapped connections and current signs rather than cutting through a launch maneuvering area. Avoid blocking ramps while organizing tackle or loading a boat.

What to know before paddling on Cass Lake

Watercraft are excluded from the buoyed swimming area. Choose the proper launch and keep clear of any active swimming zone. Before pushing off, assess wind, waves and boat traffic from shore, then choose a route with a manageable return. A convenient launch does not make open water suitable for every paddler.

Wear a properly fitted life jacket, keep a phone or communication device protected from water and tell someone your plan. For a first visit, stay within a distance you can comfortably reverse if conditions worsen. Do not rely on rental services or concessions being available outside their operating season.

Seasonal hours and capacity closures

As checked October 27, 2026, the park directory lists hours of 8 a.m. to dusk from Labor Day through Memorial Day. The summer schedule differs. Plan an autumn fishing session around daylight and allow time to pack up and walk back before closing.

The directory also warns that capacity can trigger a temporary closure of roughly 1.5–2 hours, with no re-entry if you leave during that closure. This is a planning policy, not a report that the park is full today. Check current information before departing, and bring essential supplies so a quick trip out is not required.

Fishing rules, shoreline hazards and facilities

Check the current Michigan fishing regulations for Cass Lake and your target species, including license requirements, seasons and harvest limits. For fish you intend to eat, consult the MDHHS Eat Safe Fish Guides separately. A legal harvest and a consumption recommendation are different questions.

The facility map warns of deep drop-offs along parts of the lakefront. Stay in the designated area appropriate to your activity, supervise children closely and keep back from slippery edges. Collect loose line and hooks before leaving; discarded tackle can injure wildlife and other visitors.

Restrooms and picnic facilities are shown on the map, but confirm seasonal availability if they are essential to your outing. The park map prohibits alcohol and requires pets to remain on a six-foot leash. Use designated pet areas and observe any additional posted restrictions.
