Getting to Canning Creek Campground

Recreation.gov directs visitors traveling from I-70 to take Kansas Highway 177 south for about 30 miles, turn west across Dam Road, then turn right onto City Lake Road and continue for approximately two miles. The campground entrance is on the right. Download directions before arrival because rural service can be inconsistent.

Choosing a campsite

Canning Creek has 43 reservable campsites. Recreation.gov lists standard electric sites along with three group areas designed for groups of 40, 75 and 100 people. Some sites are lakefront and some accommodate large RVs, but those features are site-specific rather than campground-wide guarantees. Wear a properly fitted life jacket, watch the open prairie horizon for thunderstorms and strong wind, and never block the launch while preparing gear. Clean, drain and dry boats, trailers, anchors and fishing equipment before moving to another lake to reduce the spread of aquatic invasive species.

Fishing Council Grove Lake

Recreation.gov highlights crappie and catfish as abundant species and notes that Council Grove was the first Kansas lake stocked with saugeye. Fish populations, harvest rules and seasonal patterns change, so check the current Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks fishing information and posted notices before fishing or keeping a catch.
