Bowdish Reservoir’s public boat ramp looks simple on a map, but non-camping visitors cannot just arrive with a trailer or car-top boat during the camping season. The concrete launch sits inside George Washington State Campground in Glocester, Rhode Island, where a seasonal parking reservation controls access. This guide explains the permit, limited parking, 10-horsepower rule, directions and practical launch planning without promising a space that has not been reserved.

Who needs the parking permit?

If you are not staying at George Washington State Campground and want to park and launch a trailerable or car-top boat, use RIDEM’s Bowdish Reservoir Boat Ramp Parking Permit form. The requirement runs from the second Friday in April through October 31.

1. Select the appropriate standard or disabled-placard parking option.
2. Choose from the dates and time periods currently shown on the live form; availability changes and should not be assumed.
3. Reserve no more than one time period in a day and no more than two days in a week.
4. Print the approved permit before leaving home.
5. Present it at the campground gate and display it on the vehicle windshield while parked.

Campground guests cannot reserve or use these four non-camper spaces. Their campground reservation governs their own access. A boat-ramp parking permit does not turn a non-camper into a registered campground guest.

Directions and arrival

Use the verified campground address at 2141 Putnam Pike in Chepachet. RIDEM’s launch directory directs visitors from Route 44 into the George Washington Campground entrance, then to the third left for the boat ramp. Follow posted internal signs and instructions from campground staff rather than relying on an unverified pin inside the wooded property.

Arrive with enough time to check in, unload and clear the ramp within your reserved period. Keep the printed permit readily available at the gate. Parking outside the designated space or failing to display the permit can result in a ticket or tow.

Launching and boat restrictions

RIDEM lists a concrete slab ramp and parking at the site. Rhode Island’s current conservation-management-area rules prohibit motors over 10 horsepower on boats launched, hauled or operated from this ramp, apart from a limited exception for permitted organized fishing activities. Ordinary visitors should plan around the 10-horsepower maximum.

• Stage straps, drain plug and gear before backing onto the ramp.
• Use a spotter when possible; wet concrete, leaves and algae can reduce traction.
• Do not park, rig or linger where you obstruct the launch.
• State rules limit tying up at a state ramp facility to 30 minutes.
• Clean all vegetation and mud from boat, trailer, motor and gear before leaving to reduce invasive-species spread.
• Wear a properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket and check current Rhode Island boating rules before departure.

Fishing and seasonal planning

Bowdish is an official freshwater fishing and boating access, but the current state pages reviewed do not publish a reliable water-specific species inventory. This guide does not guess at target fish. Check RIDEM’s current freshwater fisheries page and regulations before choosing tackle or keeping a catch.

A valid Rhode Island freshwater fishing license is generally part of trip planning unless a listed exemption applies. Current license types and fees are on RIDEM’s freshwater license page. Bowdish is not identified on the state’s current designated trout-water list, so do not add a trout stamp or trout tactics based only on nearby waters.

Facilities and accessibility

The non-camper program provides one reserved parking space for a vehicle displaying a disabled parking placard in each time period. That parking provision does not establish that the ramp, shoreline, restrooms or routes meet every visitor’s accessibility needs. Contact RIDEM before travel if step-free access or specific facilities are essential.

George Washington is a primitive campground. For campsite, utility and swimming-access details, use the George Washington State Campground guide. Rhode Island State Parks states that the campground swimming area and its parking lot are restricted to registered campers while the campground is operating. Ramp users should not assume their permit includes swimming, campsite access, showers, toilets, drinking water or other campground privileges.

Weather, water and safety checks

• Check the live permit form before departure and carry the printed approval.
• Review the forecast for wind and thunderstorms; a small forested reservoir can still become unsafe.
• Inspect the water for green scum, paint-like streaks or discoloration. Stay out and report a suspected cyanobacteria bloom to RIDEM.
• Tell someone your launch point and return time, especially when paddling alone.
• Bring offline directions because wooded areas can weaken mobile service.
• Do not camp at the boat ramp or remain overnight outside a designated campsite.

Nearby alternatives

If Bowdish parking is unavailable or the 10-horsepower limit does not fit your boat, do not improvise roadside parking.
