Eighth Lake Campground has the lake’s only public boat access: a hard-surface trailer ramp with parking for 10 cars and trailers. NYSDEC normally lists launch access until first snowfall, but a major current notice changes 2027 planning: the entire site will be closed to all public use from January 1 through June 28, 2027.
Eighth Lake launch essentials
The access is at Eighth Lake Campground and Day Use Area, 1353 State Route 28, Inlet, NY 13360. NYSDEC’s launch coordinates are 43.769266, -74.710306.
- Ramp: hard-surface, trailer-capable launch.
- Parking: 10 cars and trailers.
- Accessibility: the Hamilton County directory marks the launch itself as not accessible.
- Normal fall access: available until first snowfall.
- Seasonal fee: a day-use fee applies while the campground is operating.
- Public access: NYSDEC identifies this as the only public access to Eighth Lake.
- Powerboats: allowed.
Important 2027 closure
NYSDEC says Eighth Lake Campground and Day Use Area will close to all public use, including day use, from January 1 through June 28, 2027 for facility work. Do not rely on the usual first-snowfall launch window or the normal May opening during that closure. The agency asks visitors to stay out for their safety and the safety of construction crews.
The campground’s standard operating dates are May 15 through October 12. For 2027, the closure overrides the early portion of that schedule. Check the official campground page before towing in case construction timing or reopening details change.
Do not confuse the Seventh Lake gate note
The Hamilton County launch table also says access to Seventh Lake is gated after Columbus Day. That note specifically names Seventh Lake; it does not say Eighth Lake’s ramp closes on Columbus Day. Eighth Lake’s own normal listing remains “access available until first snowfall,” subject to the separate 2027 full-site closure.
Campground facilities and launch planning
During normal campground operations, NYSDEC lists 126 tent and trailer sites, flush toilets, hot showers, a dump station, recycling, a sand beach, swimming area, picnic facilities, canoe and kayak rentals, and hiking trails. Outside the operating season, do not assume those services remain available even when the launch is normally accessible.
Stage gear before reaching the ramp, walk the surface before backing down and keep the limited 10-space lot moving. A listed capacity is not a guarantee of an open space on a busy fall weekend.
Fishing Eighth Lake
NYSDEC describes Eighth Lake as a 314-acre water with lake-trout fishing and lists trout and smallmouth bass among its fish. The campground page also notes salmon ponds adjacent to the campground; those ponds should not be treated as proof that landlocked salmon are present in Eighth Lake itself.
Hamilton County’s current special regulations set a black-bass season of June 15 through November 30, a 12-inch minimum and a five-fish daily limit for county waters other than Fourth Lake. Catch-and-release bass fishing is also prohibited outside that open season. The same regulations prohibit ice fishing on trout waters unless a named exception applies; Eighth Lake is not listed as an exception on the current Region 5 page. Recheck the current regulations before fishing because rules can change.
Boating, paddling and safety
Powerboats, rowboats and canoes are allowed. Check wind and water temperature before launching, wear a properly fitted life jacket and carry cold-water protection in fall. The unsupervised campground beach is separate from the ramp; NYSDEC limits swimming there to designated areas and prohibits swimming from one-half hour before sunset until one-half hour after sunrise.
Clean, drain and dry boats, trailers and fishing gear before moving between waters. Remove visible plants and animals at the launch, and follow New York’s baitfish and firewood rules.
