A practical ramp for a long Adirondack lake
NYSDEC describes Long Lake as the largest lake in the Blue Mountain Wild Forest area, extending about 14 miles and offering water deep enough for motorboats of various sizes. That makes the public hard-surface ramp useful for anglers, recreational boaters and paddlers who want a defined access point rather than an unimproved shoreline launch.
Walk the ramp before backing down, stage gear away from the launch lane and prepare tie-downs before reaching the water. A 60-space listing indicates substantial parking capacity, but it is not a guarantee that a space will remain open during summer weekends or events.
Fishing Long Lake
NYSDEC lists smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, northern pike, walleye and panfish in Long Lake. The agency’s Hamilton County fishing guide also names the lake among the county’s top waters for smallmouth bass, largemouth bass and northern pike. Species listings describe the fishery; they do not guarantee a catch.
For Hamilton County waters other than Fourth Lake, the current Region 5 rule lists a black-bass season from June 15 through November 30, a 12-inch minimum and a five-fish daily limit. Fishing for black bass, including catch-and-release, is prohibited outside that open season. Check the current statewide freshwater regulations before every trip because rules for other species and seasons can change.
Wind and open-water safety
Long Lake’s length creates real exposure. NYSDEC warns that wind can produce large waves and advises paddlers to remain near shore during rough weather. Check the forecast at the launch, wear a properly fitted life jacket and turn back early if whitecaps build. Cold water can remain hazardous even on a mild spring or fall day.
Carry navigation lights and required safety equipment for your craft, keep a chart or offline map available, and leave a float plan with someone on shore. The public ramp is an access point—not proof that conditions are safe for every boat.
Protect Long Lake from invasive species
NYSDEC requires boats, trailers and equipment to be drained and cleaned of visible plant and animal material before launching at and leaving DEC sites. Inspect the propeller, bunks, axle and livewell, then clean, drain and dry equipment before moving to another water.
