Herb Beck Marina provides a specific public launch into Quilcene Bay on the west side of Hood Canal. The Port of Port Townsend currently lists the ramp as open, with a $15 daily launch fee and trailer parking one block away—but it also warns that the narrow, steep existing ramp is nearing the end of its useful life and is scheduled for replacement in 2027. This guide explains the approach, payment, ramp limitations, marina services, fishing checks and safer launch planning.

Drive to the south end of the marina

Where U.S. 101 bends sharply through Quilcene, turn onto Linger Longer Road and follow it toward the bay. At the end of the road, turn left into Herb Beck Marina. The Port’s launch directory places the ramp at the south end of the parking lot.

Use 1731 Linger Longer Road, Quilcene, WA 98376 for navigation. Stage the boat before occupying the ramp and follow onsite signs to the designated vehicle-and-trailer parking area one block away. Do not leave a tow vehicle in the maneuvering area after launching.

Expect a narrow, steep single-lane ramp

The Port’s current community project page describes the existing ramp as narrow, steep, deteriorating and close to the end of its useful life. An earlier Port facility assessment identifies a single concrete lane and no dedicated temporary-moorage float at the ramp. Existing marina floats may help with short launch or retrieval tie-ups when access is allowed and space is available, but confirm conditions locally rather than relying on a float.

• Walk the ramp before backing down and inspect the wet-waterline surface.
• Check the tide for both launch and planned retrieval time.
• Use a spotter where possible because the ramp is narrow.
• Carry dock lines and fenders, but do not assume a handling float is available.
• Abort the launch if traction, depth, crosswind or maneuvering room is unsuitable for the rig.

Pay the 2026 ramp fee

The current Port page sets the daily launch fee at $15 and the rolling annual launch permit at $105. Guest registration and payment can be made at the iron ranger near the ramp. Credit-card payment is also available by calling the marina during business hours.

The marina office currently lists hours of 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, but the Port says hours vary. Carry a backup payment method and follow the instructions posted at the ramp rather than assuming the office will be staffed.

Marina services and day-use facilities

Herb Beck Marina lists up to 50 boat spaces, potable water, electricity, a pump-out station, a swimming beach, boat launch and day-use picnic area. Restrooms and showers are available by key fob, so a day-use visitor should not assume unrestricted access without confirming with the marina office.

The facility is a working marina beside active aquaculture property and residential neighbors. Stay within marked public areas, keep noise down, do not block marina operations and never enter commercial oyster facilities or private shoreline.

2027 replacement project

The Port is designing a wider, less-steep replacement ramp with an ADA-accessible concrete wedge and a handling float on the north side. The project also includes parking-area resurfacing, layout and signage work, landscaping and restroom renovation. Construction is scheduled for 2027, with permitting underway.

No current closure is posted on the marina page as of September 11, 2026. Still, this is a changing capital project: check the official Quilcene construction-update page immediately before travel, especially for a trip planned in 2027.

Fishing in Hood Canal Marine Area 12

Quilcene Bay connects directly to Hood Canal, which WDFW manages as Marine Area 12 south of the Hood Canal Bridge. Salmon, coastal cutthroat trout, crab, shrimp and shellfish opportunities vary by location and season. Hood Canal also has important bottomfish and forage-fish restrictions, so the existence of a public ramp does not establish that a target species is open.

Before fishing, check the current WDFW Marine Area 12 page, the regulation pamphlet and emergency rules. Carry the required license and catch record card, verify exact boundaries and follow species-specific retention, size and gear rules.

Shellfish harvest is closed here in September 2026

WDFW’s exact Quilcene Boat Ramp beach record sets the 2026 clam, mussel and oyster season from January 15 through May 15 only. That makes recreational harvest at this small beach closed on September 11, 2026. The larger Quilcene Bay WDFW Tidelands site is a separate access area with its own rules.

When a future season is open, harvest is lawful only if both WDFW’s season and the Washington Department of Health shellfish-safety status are open that day. Use the official Quilcene Boat Ramp shellfish record and the linked health map rather than treating the marina’s beach as automatically open.

Quilcene Bay boating safety

• Check Hood Canal wind, weather and visibility for both departure and return.
• Wear a properly fitted life jacket and dress for cold water.
• Account for the steep ramp and any tide-related change in usable depth.
• Watch for sediment, debris and low-water hazards near the marina entrance.
• Give commercial and tribal fishing activity room during openings.
• Keep clear of aquaculture gear, private tidelands and marked working areas.
• Carry navigation lights, communications and emergency equipment appropriate for the route.
• Leave a float plan ashore and turn back when wind or visibility exceeds the crew’s limits.

Nearby launch alternatives

Launch with a conservative plan

Herb Beck Marina remains a useful southern Jefferson County gateway to Quilcene Bay, but its current ramp deserves respect. Verify construction status and fees, arrive with enough crew for a narrow single lane, inspect the slope and traction, and have a nearby alternative ready. The planned 2027 replacement should improve access; until then, size the trip to the ramp that exists today.
