Wolf Lake State Fish Hatchery and its visitor center sit at 34270 County Road 652 in Mattawan. Established in 1927, the working hatchery raises Chinook salmon, muskellunge, steelhead and walleye for Michigan waters. The visitor experience combines fisheries education with easy outdoor exploring, making it useful for families, anglers and wildlife watchers.
What You Can See
The grounds include a show pond with trout, salmon, lake sturgeon and other fish, plus self-guided marked trails through prairie, wetland and forest habitats. The Michigan DNR also lists live-animal displays, an exhibit hall, a gift shop, seasonal programs and strong birdwatching during migration. Fish populations and displays can change, so treat any individual animal sighting as a possibility rather than a guarantee.
Current Hours and Tours
The trails and show pond are open year-round from dawn to dusk. Current visitor-center hours are: Jan. 2–March 30, the first Saturday of each month from 10 a.m.–4 p.m.; April 1–Memorial Day, Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m.–4 p.m.; Memorial Day–Labor Day, daily from 10 a.m.–5 p.m.; Labor Day–Nov. 14, Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m.–4 p.m.; and Nov. 15–Dec. 31, closed.

Plan Your Visit
- Address: 34270 County Road 652, Mattawan, MI 49071.
- Visitor-center admission is free; confirm current parking requirements before arrival.
- Allow extra time for the outdoor trails and show pond, which remain accessible outside the building’s seasonal schedule.
- Keep children behind railings and do not feed wildlife unless staff specifically permits it.
Wolf Lake is best approached as a working fisheries facility with an educational visitor area—not a zoo or guaranteed wildlife encounter. That distinction helps set realistic expectations while leaving plenty to explore.
