Discover Michigan’s Wild Side at Detroit’s Outdoor Adventure Center

Detroit’s Outdoor Adventure Center at 1801 Atwater Street brings Michigan’s outdoor recreation indoors through more than 20 interactive and educational exhibits. The Michigan DNR operates the center in the restored Globe Building beside the Detroit Riverwalk.

What to Expect

Visitors can explore hands-on exhibits about trails, camping, fishing, waterways and wildlife. Simulators and activity stations introduce snowmobiling, off-road riding, mountain biking, kayaking and other outdoor experiences. The center is designed for families and groups, but children must remain under direct adult supervision.

Current Hours and Closures

The official Outdoor Adventure Center visitor page lists public hours as Wednesday through Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. Monday is closed, and Tuesday is reserved for groups by appointment. Admission sales end at 3:30 p.m.

The OAC also lists annual closures, including the full month of September for maintenance and several major holidays. In 2026 it is also closed for Detroit Free Press Marathon road closures on Oct. 18. Verify the official page before a long drive.

Admission and Parking

Current individual admission is $7 for adults ages 13–61, $5 for seniors 62 and older, $5 for children ages 2–12, and free for children younger than 2. Museums for All admission is $3 for eligible visitors. Fees can change, so use the official visitor page as the final authority.

Guest parking is in the gated lot off Atwater Street west of St. Aubin Street. Parking costs $5 per vehicle before 4 p.m., and the lot accepts credit cards only. A Michigan Recreation Passport is not used for OAC admission or this parking lot.

Extend the Visit

The Detroit Riverwalk and Dequindre Cut offer nearby walking and biking options. For a very different Detroit history stop, consider Historic Fort Wayne; check its current grounds and tour access before going.
